Hello any readers (hopefully my son and other future children one day)!

Here’s some info about me and the lowdown on this blog.

My name is Jessica. I’m a vegan Mama of an amazing son who is 14 months old as I type this. I work full-time as a second grade at-risk teacher while my husband stays home with our son and works on growing his music business (he’s a rapper, musician, producer, motivational speaker, and my dream man)! Though my husband is not vegan, our diets coexist peacefully and we both raise our son vegan. We have two dogs- Prince Charming and Glorie, and one cat- Gracie. Our dogs are lively and faithful pit bulls and our cat is a sweet princess. We live in Detroit, MI. A city that we love so much. I have been a vegan since 2006 (12 years vegan at the moment). My husband and I have been together for almost five years, married for three and a half of those incredible years. We love Jesus and live authentically out of our faith and love and connection with God. Our testimonies are something we love to share. We attend and are in community at a church in our city called Detroit Church. It’s such a cool family of believers and we’ve been blessed to be a part of it.

My goal is to keep posts pretty short and sweet because who has the time to read it all (and do I have the time to write it all)? I can see myself getting pretty long and passionate about some topics, but of course that’s up to you to read (and me to commit to writing).

My other goal is to document my journey and discovery on topics relating to: raising a biracial son, my hair journey with my son, home management tips, organizing efficient and productive schedules, vegan health and nutrition since conception and through pregnancy, marriage, supplement recommendations, being a pet owner, family life in Detroit, race and racism, and so so much more! My heart is to let people out there know- YOU’RE NOT ALONE and to share some wisdom on this beautiful journey of life! Hopefully I can encourage you and make your life a little more of what you dream it to be.

My Son is Walking!

Jairus started walking yesterday, on the first day of February, 2019. My husband asked if we can go to The Detroit Historical Museum, and I said yes! It was the first time I held Jairus’s hand and let him “walk” down the stairs out to the car. He was giggling! Then when he saw the snow, he said “WOOOW.” It’s his way of asking sometimes. At the museum, me and his daddy held his hands (the first time we’ve ever done that ❤️), and walked around the museum. When Daddy went exploring things on his own, me and Jairus walked around. This was the longest stretch I ever held his hand and let him walk! I think the muscle memory of his feet walking and the growing familiarity of life higher up from the ground clicked for him. I could feel it... like this exercise and length of time walking would really do something, and it did! Jairus grew more confident and started walking that day! Still Breastfeeding and Pumping at 14 Months Postpartum!

Breastmilk is magic. I am so forever grateful to work at a school that still supports me with pumping- 14 months after Jairus’s birth. I know so many women can’t claim that for their work situations, and it’s an injustice to their personal health and their baby’s optimal health. I went back to work when Jairus was 14 weeks old. Julia made personal sacrifices as my co-teacher that school-year to allow me to pump 3-4 times a day- every day- and my amazing boss Emily continues to support my desire to this day to pump milk (even though I am past the one year limit of legal protection as a breastfeeding mom). She oftentimes forfeits the comfort of her own office to meet me where I pump. This school year, Carmen continues to support me pumping 2-3 times a day... going out of her way to make sure her after-school clubs are temporarily rerouted from our room until I’m done (and she’s handled some awkward situations when people walked in on me pumping, such a bold and kind woman)! Jairus’s First Time in the Snow! ❄️

Greetings! Here in Detroit, we’re enjoying our second day off in a row! Yesterday we got around 6 inches, and today was called off due to cold temperatures. I’m almost 100% certain tomorrow will be called off too! Right now the high for tomorrow says -3 and the low is -15. That’s whats called a polar vortex! If you throw some water out of your bottle up in the air, it will freeze on its way down. That cold!  I’ve been holding off on letting Jairus chill (pun intended) in the snow because though he has snow suits, he didn’t have waterproof snow boots. Thanks to a friend letting me borrow her son’s that he grew out of, now Jairus can frolic in the snow. I wanted to wait until he was properly dressed but also until he could walk so he could roam as he pleased, but since he’s been seeing so much snow, he’s been getting curious.
