Biracial/Mixed Hair Journey #2 Hair Post

Hey y’all!
Today, I got a snow day ❄️ because we’re getting quite a few inches here in Detroit. That means extra housework for me usually, haha! I honestly appreciate having extra time for it though because that means the rest of our days, we are living more comfortably in our home. As part of my morning routine with Jairus the days I’m home from work, I now style his hair. It’s so cute to see my son have curls that have come in. What started me on this hair journey with my son was a few weeks ago, I was combing his hair and the comb got stuck. I realized his hair was matting a little at the ends and his hair seemed like it was getting dry. I thought it was strange thinking of conditioning a 12 month old’s hair at that time, but now I realize that was a super white mom moment! Sorry son! Now I know better. I’m truly a novice to learning how to properly care for his beautiful hair, but I must say, it’s been a joy looking lost in textured hair aisles at the store and having such sweet women hear me out and educate me on the journey of caring for textured hair.

Since Jairus got a hair wash with just conditioner a few days ago, his hair is clean and can simply be styled every morning until he’s due for his next wash. It’s not necessary and dries his hair out to wash with shampoo each time (recently learned this), so I am going to shampoo probably once or twice a month. In my previous ignorance, I thought this would be neglectful, but it’s another aha! moment as a white mother to a beautiful mixed child.

This morning, I used a leave-in conditioner spray as the moisturizer before brushing. Since I don’t have a detangler product for him yet, I figured this would do. I know other mamas mix water and some leave-in conditioner in a spray bottle and spray before brushing. This is to make sure the hair doesn’t undergo breakage or strain being brushed dry. Quite different from my hair since I just go to town and brush it dry! After spraying and brushing and then combing the ends out, I put in a leave-in conditioner for the first time. It’s a sample product from Mixed Chicks. It made Jairus’s hair smell like a Cabbage Patch Doll mixed with Playdo πŸ˜‚ Basically the smell of childhood every time you kiss his head. This is one of the best hair days he’s had on this new journey so far! His curls were moisturized, bouncy, and full of volume.

After his nap, I refreshed his hair just for the fun of it! When I refreshed it, I simply added in some Moisture Milk by Camille Rose and then “locked” the moisture in with Argan oil. You can see all the pictures of this fun hair day below!

Lots of love,
Jessica
